How to download and configure mIRC for StarBand-Version 6.12 (as of Oct 13 2003)
http://www.mirc.com
mIRC is distributed in a self-extracting cabinets that will install mIRC on your PC. You don't need any external programs to install and setup mIRC on your PC, just follow the instructions below.
If you have a normal windows 95, 98, 2000, ME, NT or XP, go on installing the 32 bit issue of mIRC
Follow the instructions on http://www.mirc.com/install.html to install MIRC
Newer versions should look similar to this version in a different area on your screen, but basically the info here is the same for all versions.
All these instructions will give you the basic setup
only so you can get to the channel and talk.
If you plan to use mIRC other than for Member to Member StarBand Chats, please upgrade your mIRC client regularly for fixes or bugs the program might have.
My suggestion is to PRINT OUT these instructions so you can see them in front of you, as you configure mIRC for StarBand.
If you need further assistance please do not hesitate to email me at memberschat@starband.net
For all Users who do not want to download a program like mIRC you can try this:
mIRC is much easier to read but you can use this site if
you do not want to download a program.
go to http://discussion.starband.com/~members
click on New User
make sure you use a StarBand email account in the info
Create a Username
an email will be sent to you that will give you a password
Once you get that, fill it in the regular "user and password"
It will take you to the Web Board. Once you are on the web board Click
on CHAT at the top of the page.
It will take you to the chat page (takes a few seconds to get in) that will take
you to the member to member chat.
When the chat is finished you can also use this forum to post questions you might have.
Remember: YOU MUST BE ON A STARBAND SYSTEM TO USE THIS SITE or it will NOT WORK.
Just remember this is only an alternative to an IRC Program because it is not as good as using a program but it is better than nothing at all.
For those using a MAC (mIRC doesn't
at this time support MAC) you can try this web site:
http://www.irchelp.org/irchelp/mac/
to find an irc client that works.
1. Double click the icon (shortcut) to start up mIRC
mIRC will start and show the mIRC Options Dialog and require you to fill in some information:

It will highlight "Connect”:
For Full Name: You Never put your real name
as you see above.
For Email Address: The same here you make one up. This way no
one knows your real email email address and can spam you.
Nickname & Alternate Nick Name: This is the name you would put
when you log onto the server.
Put a "Check" mark next to Invisible Mode
Server will NOT say StarBand Chat because you have not entered this server yet- it will probably be one of the pre servers already on the list of chat servers.
Once you are done click "OK"
2. Next: Highlight "Servers"

You will see a "Add" key- Click that
3. Another Box will open that will say "Add Server"

Description: (type in) StarBand
Chat
Port: 7000
4. This will bring you back to the Mirc
Options Screen
Highlight: "Options"

Put a "check" in everything you see above in this picture.
5. Select "Local Info" Normally you don't have to fill in anything here. mIRC will fill this in when you connect and it will look similar to what you see below (except your name will be in it). Just make sure the boxes under 'On Connect, Always get Local Host and IP Address are Checked (selected).
Look at pic below:

6. Select "Identd" and Enable the Identd Server. (Your account name is the part before the @ in your email address, (like robinb). The System should always be set to UNIX and the port is always port 113. 'Show Ident requests' should be checked and , 'Enable only when connecting' can be set On.
Check pic below:

7. Go next to the Firewall

check "socks 4" Port
1080
Once this is all set, click on the OK button to close the mIRC Options Dialog.
8. Click on "Options" (circled in the picture below). It should show you Server: StarBand Chat, and all you do is click on the "Connect to Server" tab
See Pic below

9. You will start to see it connecting as you will see below. This first picture shows, in the Status Box, shows it is connecting to discussion.starband.net (7000). This information which is on this screen is what you will see as it connects.
10. This picture below shows you the rest of what you will see once it finishes connecting. When it is finished connecting it will show "end of /MOTD Command".

11. Once it connects you will see a pop up box called
“Mirc Channel Folder” come up with a
group of channels. You can either “add”
#StarBandchat .(as shown below)
A. If this box does not come up you can still add the channel StarBand to the folder. Click on the icon "Channel Folder", as you see below:

C. When you click on Add, (as you
see below) another popup box will open for you to add the channel info. You
will add the channel name: StarBandChat, and
you can put in a description if you like. You can also check
"Auto-join channel on connect". For Network,
leave it as All because StarBand is not in
the list that mIRC has. Once finished click OK.

D. When you click OK as you saw on the last picture, #starBandchat will be added to the list of other channels. (see below). You can add
as many channels as you like in here. Using the same method for each channel.

E. Now if you want to just join the channel you will have to reclick the icon
"Channel Folder" and click on the word "Join".
This gives you the ability not to have to keep typing the name of the
channel ever again.
/join #starbandchat and hit “enter”
ex: /join(space)#starbandchat (you need to leave a space- after the word "join"-not type in the word "space")
This will take you to the channel where the chat is.

H. This will take out all the channels you do not need. All you need to
do is click the Join button and if you want it to always pop up this box
just check the "Pop Up Folder on Connect" and each time you log
onto the server this box will popup.

12.
B. Highlight "Ignore" (see below)

Under "Method" make sure it says "Disabled". You can always enable it if you want to accept a file from someone you know.
If you need further info please email me at memberschat@starband.net and I will be happy to help you out.
